psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs

jan - may, 2026 @9:30 am

Teachers:  Pastor Nick Hathaway and Mr. Chris Maggitti

Colossians 3:16 tells us to be "teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs." We will examine the metrical psalms of the Trinity Hymnal against the Scripture to draw out meaning and application for us and our worship. We will sit in parts and learn harmonies to better sing the psalms. We will also examine hymns that use the same tunes, digging into their church history milieu and the author's Christian testimony. As opportunity affords, we will also compare and study new renditions of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs even as Psalm 96:1 enjoins us to "sing a new song unto the Lord."

The Holiness of God

Teachers:  RE Leu Beach & RE Todd Walker

Few truths are as central to the Christian faith—yet as neglected in our day—as the holiness of God. In this classic work, Dr. R.C. Sproul unfolds the biblical portrait of a God who is transcendently majestic, morally pure, and infinitely worthy of reverence. Through Scripture, theology, and church history, Sproul shows how a right understanding of God’s holiness transforms our worship, prayer, and daily obedience.

The virtues

jan - may, 2026 @ 9:30 am

Teacher:  Pastor Kurt Scharping

The Holy Spirit says in 2 Peter 1:5-8, "For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue..." In obedience to this, we will be learning Christian ethics from the virtue tradition. What does it mean to be a virtuous person? Many people have ideas about what a good person is. Most are able to affirm that they must be strong, prudent, temperate, and just. These are good. To these we will add self-denial, humility, modesty, knowledge, sobriety, chastity, steadfastness, honor, vigilance, and contentment. All of this of course is under the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and love towards Christ. So are you interested in these things? Come to my class: Christian Personal Virtues.

Facilitators:  RE Patrick Kavanagh and Mrs. Janet Barker

Historian Dave Stotts will lead us through the world of the Old Testament—journeying back before Israel’s founding to walk with the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, witnessing the miracles of the Exodus in Egypt, crossing the Jordan into the Promised Land, and exploring places like the Dead Sea, Jericho, Masada, and the Valley of Elah, where David faced Goliath—before turning to the New Testament to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, tracing the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy, examining the Star of Bethlehem, and traveling through Nazareth, Galilee, Jerusalem, and beyond to experience Christ’s ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection.
